Wired News: The Building is the Solar Cell

Wired News has a short recap on the companies working on CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenide) solar cells. By using CIGS, manufacturers can make solar cells 100 times thinner than silicon based solar cells, at hopefully a much cheaper prices. Thin film technology can allow building materials such as steel, glass, and roofing to have CIGS cells directly embedded in them. They say the company to watch is Heliovolt.
“”What sets HelioVolt apart is that its technology allows them to deposit thin-film materials more quickly, efficiently and at a potentially lower cost than conventional process technologies,” said Joel Serface, director of the Clean Energy Incubator in Austin, Texas.”
