Algae-Based Fuels Set to Bloom

By MB-BigB | March 4, 2007

From MIT Technology Review - an update on using algae to reduce greenhouse gases and produce fuel. Solix Biofuels, LiveFuels, and GreenFuel Technology (which I’ve posted on previously) are mentioned, along with their strategies. For example, Solix Biofuels is using algae to make “just about anything that can be made from crude oil.” LiveFuels is growing algae in open ponds to make fuel (and developing strategies to maximize algae production), while Greenfuel Technologies is developing closed bioreactors, which can capture about 80 percent of the carbon dioxide emitted from a power plant during the day. The algae then grown can be converted into fuel.
