Screen printed solar cells can be used in windows

By MB-BigB | January 30, 2008

According to Science Daily, a new solar cell being developed by members of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE can be screen printed with a whole bunch of different patterns and colors which will allow them to be incorporated directly into a building’s design. For example, the solar cells can even be used on windows, which will not only help with shading, but will also generate electricity.

Fraunhofer ISE physicist Andreas Hinsch says that they don’t see this dye solar cell as a competitor to conventional silicon cells. It’s only 4 percent efficient, which pales in comparison to regular silicon cells normally used on rooftops. However, the thin nature of these cells and the fact that colar and images can be integrated directly on the cell means that they can be used on building facades and windows.
