Australia launches project to bury carbon dioxide

CNN.com reports that Australia has opened a new plant in southern Victoria state that pumps carbon dioxide deep underground to stop it from getting into the atmosphere, a technique known as geosequestration. This one R&D project is expected to handle 110,231 tons of CO2, which will be captured from industry emissions, compressed, and then injected 6,500 ft underground into a depleted natural gas reservoir.
Environmentalists are against the idea, saying the the project would achieve little and that efforts should be spent on projects to reduce emissions in the first place.
As part of the pilot, the site will be monitored for any leaks and other issues. The goal is to demonstrate that carbon geosequestration is a safe and viable way to combat global warming.
