Minnesota Power adding wind transmission capacity

Minnesota Power recently announced that they plan to acquire a direct current (DC) transmission line in order to transport planned additional wind power electricity from North Dakota. Minnesota Power is spending $80 million to buy the power line from Square Butte Electric Cooperative.
The line currently transports power from the coal based Milton R. Young Generating Station in Center, North Dakota to Minnesota Power’s electricity distribution network. Minnesota Power plans to develop another 500 to 700 megawatts of wind power in North Dakota and use the line to get the electricity to its customer.
The state of Minnesota is requiring all its utilities to get at least 25% of their energy from renewable and alternative sources by 2025 - Minnesota Power plans to hit that threshold well before the deadline.
