UPS expands testing of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

The United Parcel Service (UPS) has announced that they are expanding their U.S. hydrogen fuel cell testing program to include three large package delivery vehicles. UPS’s initial tests conducted on fuel cell cars were very successful, so they are ready to move to the next phase.
The new fuel cell trucks, which are being built as part of a collaborative project with DaimlerChrysler and the EPA, are based on a fuel cell powered Dodge Sprinter that was tested in Germany by UPS and DaimlerChrysler. The newest design has a 20% increase in power-train efficiency, a 40% increase in range to 155 miles, and a 45% increase in peak engine power over the original fuel cell powered Sprinter. Acceleration is the same as a similiar sized gas or diesel fueled UPS truck.
The new trucks will be refueled daily at the EPA’s hydrogen fueling station at its National Emissions Testing Lab in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
