The NY Times got its hands on the not yet available new generation Prius and hit 69 mpg.   Of course, they were driving the Prius in a way you probably wouldn’t want to to on public roads (i.e. slow with lots of coasting), but the new 2010 Prius does have an EPA rating of 51 mpg in the city and 48 on the highway.     There are several new features and changes in the next gen Prius that boost mileage, provide a better driving experience, and give you more headroom in the backseat and more leg and shoulder room.
