US Dairy Farm Manure Begins to Power Homes

From Reuters by way of Planet Ark – 26 May 2006

“NEW YORK – Lee Jensen says the manure from his dairy farm powers almost as many homes as he has cows.” By using methane digestors to power generators, farmers are beginning to pump electricity back into the power grids. Lee Jensen has 875 cows, and the manure from those cows is generating 775 kwh or power, or enough to power about 600 homes. Also, since methane is considered a greenhouse gas (actually, its a more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2), farmers are also starting to sell credits on the Chicago Climate Exchange by capturing and burning methane to produce electricity. Read about using methane as an alternative fuel.
