“Over 15,000MW” of wind power installed in 2006

The Washington based Worldwatch Institute is reporting that 15,200 megawatts of new wind power turbines were installed in 2006, which is the equivalent of 23 coal-fired power plants. The wind turbines also reduced CO2 output by about 43 million tons, which equals the emissions of about 8 million cars.
Worldwatch took into account the intermittent energy production of wind turbines in their calculations. No word from Worldwatch on how things are going so far in 2007, but they note that India and China are installing wind power turbines at an increasing pace and they expect rapid growth in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, and Portugal. Germany, Spain and the US generated over half the total increase in wind power capacity in 2006.
