Convert your Prius to a plug-in

If you live in or near San Francisco, you can have your Prius, Mercury Mariner, or Ford Escape Hybrid converted over to a plug-in (PHEV) for about $7,500, CNN reports. Luscious Garage sells and performs the conversion – they change the nickel-metal-hydride batteries over to lead acid batteries that extend the distance the hybrid can travel on electricity, and adds adapters so you can plug in the car to recharge the batteries through your wall outlet. Pretty soon they expect to start using lithium ion batteries in their conversions.

While the cars can still use the gas engine if needed for long trips, Luscious Garage owner and lead technician Carolyn Coquillette says that for normal driving around town, “Gas becomes optional.”
