Scottish engineering firm Artemis Intelligent Power has successfully tested a hydraulic hybrid system that reduces the need for large batteries. Current hybrid technology uses regenerative braking to generate energy as the car slows down – the energy is stored in the hybrid battery system. In Artemis’s system, the energy is stored in a hydraulic accumulator.
According to Artemis, this system gets better fuel mileage than a battery hybrid because the hydraulic system is only about a third of the size and weight of a battery hybrid. In addition, the hydraulic system is made up of non toxic materials like aluminum, steel and rubber, rather than the hazardous materials used in current hybrid battery technology.
