CNN reports that General Motors is about to begin field testing the lithium-ion batteries that will be used in the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt is intended to be GM’s plug-in hybrid. It will run off of electric motors and will have a small gasoline engine onboard that will be used to recharge the car’s batteries.
The field testing will take place in specially equiped versions of the Chevrolet Malibu and will allow GM to test the batteries in actual driving situations. GM’s current plans are to start actually selling the Volt in 2010.
