Honda’s new CR-Z Sport Hybrid priced at $19,950 – available August 24th

Honda just announced that their 2011 Honda CR-Z 2-seater sport coupe hybrid will hit dealers on August 24th, 2010 and will have a suggested retail price (including destination and handling charges) of $19,950 for the base, manual transmission model.   If you want the continuously variable automatic transmission, or CVT (which boosts the fuel economy), it’ll cost you another $1,560.

The CR-Z, which so far has been getting some good press from the small number of reviews that have been published, is being billed as a sporty performance car that just happens to be a hybrid to get better gas mileage.     The gas mileage isn’t world beating for a hybrid – 37 mpg in the city, 39 on the highway (the mileage for the manual transmission model is lower at 31 mpg city, 35 highway).    The CR-Z focuses on the performance aspect of the car by mating a 122-horsepower, 1.5-liter single overhead cam four cylinder engine with a 10-kilowatt electric motor that adds up to 13 horsepower at a low 1,500 rpm.  The electric motor is used as needed, and helps the acceleration – making the CR-Z quite lively.
