The International Herald Tribune showcases A123Systems in its Business section today. A123Systems is one of a number of companies trying to make low cost batteries for plug-in hybrids. The company is developing batteries for use in the Saturn Vue for GM, and they are hoping to get a similar contract to develop lithium-ion batteries for the Chevrolet Volt, GM’s plug-in hybrid concept car, due out in 2010.
“A123Systems batteries are different. Yet-Ming Chiang, a professor of materials science and engineering at MIT and a co-founder of A123Systems, described their advantages: “Used in a hybrid vehicle, our batteries deliver faster acceleration than any other batteries of the same size,” Chiang said. “And the chemical stability of the cathode material greatly improves safety as well as extending battery life.””
