Walmart Helping to Develop Hybrid Truck

Walmart has started working with a company named ArvinMeritor to develop a new diesel-electric hybrid truck. In a news release this week, both companies said that they had agreed to develop a “dual-mode, diesel-electric drivetrain for a class 8 truck.” The Class 8 truck is considered the “workhorse of the US long-distance trucking industry.”

We’ve linked to some previous articles on Walmart before, which showed how the company has become increasing environmentally conscious, from selling compact flourescent bulbs cheaply to building several “green” stores that use alternative energy and conservation principles for power. Last year, Walmart President and CEO Lee Scott said that their goal was to double the fuel efficiency of their truck fleet as part of the company’s new environmental program.
