University of Wisconsin creates first diesel-hybrid SUV

We’ve seen a couple of other articles on diesel-hybrid cars – earlier we posted an article about the Citroen, which is supposed to come to market in 2008. This article, from Stoneman Auto Review, talks about a Chevy Equinox which was modified by a University of Wisconsin-Madison research group as part of Challenge X. There’s a couple of differences between this hybrid and others – for example, the electric engine runs all the time and just powers the rear wheels, while the diesel powers the front wheels. This provides more fuel efficiency at higher speed, which is one of the weaknesses of current hybrids. The result is a 50% gain in fuel efficiency over the stock Equinox, from 15-20 mpg to 35 mpg. Members of the student led group say that the cost to install it would be in the $3000-$5000 range.
