Hybrid Coalition

According to World Magazine, former CIA director R. James Woosley owns a Toyota Prius with a bumper sticker on the back that reads, “Bin Laden hates this car.” The article talks about the Set America Free Coalition, a group that consists of “tree huggers, do-gooders, sodbusters, cheap hawks, and evangelicals…and Willie Nelson.” The “cheap hawks” in the coalition, a group of pro-defense Washington insiders like Woosley, Center for Security Policy president Frank Gaffney, and Middle East Forum director Daniel Pipes, are joining forces with the environmentalists in advocating alternative fuels for energy independence.

We’re starting to hear about some of the results of the Coalition efforts on Capitol Hill. In the President’s State of the Union address this week, President Bush announced a proposal to cut gasoline consumption by 20% over the next 10 years and replacing oil with 35 billion gallons of alternative fuel. The energy independence for national security philosophy and calls for alternative and renewable fuelds from the so-called “cheap hawks” is beginning to march in lockstep with the Democrats’ emphasis on the environment.
