The Oregonian – Pick up the pace on fuel conservation
By MB-BigB | June 3, 2006
An editorial in yesterday’s Oregonian discusses the seemingly unwillingness of Congress to do anything for oil conservation. Here’s an idea from Sen Gordon Smith (R-Ore) to create “feebates” in which the government would either offer a rebate for fuel efficient vehicles or would charge a surcharge for gas guzzlers. Not a new idea, that’s for sure, but one that would provide an incentive for people to buy fuel efficient cars, while not penalizing people for previous decisions to buy a car that didn’t get such great mileage, which is what would happen with an increase in gasoline taxes as a way to supress consumption.
