Konarka Technologies demos their inkjet printed solar cells
By MB-BigB | March 4, 2008
Konarka Technologies, Inc, said Tuesday that they have successfully conducted the first ever demonstration of inkjet printed solar cells. Rick Hess, the president and CEO of Konarka said the the demo is a “milestone for the company and represents an, “essential breakthrough in the field of printed solar cells.” Konarka currently makes solar cells called Power Plastic – flexible lightweight light-activated cells that are made from “conducting polymers and nano-engineered materials” on plastic substrates.
While the inkjet printed solar cells produced are far less efficient than silicon based solar cells, manufacturing will be far easier and cheaper, and cells to cover a large area can be quickly and easily made. The cells can also be printed on a variety of materials, which means flexible cells made out of various colors and patterns.
