Solar carports catching on in California

solar carport
I’ve posted a couple of articles about solar carports before – now it appears that the idea is catching on big time with California School Districts.  One school district that has fully embraced the solar carport concept is the Milpitas Unified School District – they get about 75 percent of their yearly electricity needs from the solar panel carports that they have built.  Over a 20 year period, Milpitas (in the California Bay Area) expects to save millions of dollars in energy costs.   Not to mention the fact that cars parked under the carport all day stay cooler, so the air conditioner doesn’t have to work quite as hard when you’re driving home for the day.

Now since solar panels and carports aren’t cheap (unfortunately), the school districts are paying for the systems via partnerships with banks and companies like Chevron, which build the carports and then sell the electricity produced back to the schools at reduced rates.
