Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders – on why “It’s time for a solar revolution”

The Independent Senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders, speaks his mind in today’s Burlington Free Press on why he feels the US needs a “Solar Revolution”, and why he’s sponsored the “Ten Million Solar Roofs Act” .

“Thomas Edison, one of history’s greatest inventors, said, “I’d put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don’t have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that.”

He was right then, in 1931, and he remains right today. The American people agree. Today, 92 percent of all Americans want our country to develop solar energy resources, and 77 percent believe the federal government should make solar power development a national priority.

That is why I was joined by 10 of my colleagues in introducing the Ten Million Solar Roofs Act. The bill is all of nine pages and is pretty straightforward. It calls for 10 million new solar rooftop systems and 200,000 new solar water heating systems during the next 10 years.

When fully implemented, this legislation would lead to 30,000 megawatts of new photovoltaic energy, tripling our total current U.S. solar energy capacity. It will increase by almost 20 times our current energy output from photovoltaic panels. The legislation rapidly will increase production of solar panels, driving down the price of photovoltaic systems. It also would mean the creation of more than a million new jobs. The passage of this bill would reorient dramatically our energy priorities and would be a major step forward toward a clean-energy future for the United States.”

  1. I gues people is seeing that we need to chang our behavior before is to late. Fosil fuels have been damaging our environment fo a while now and its time to change.

Constructing a solar panel is an interesting project. I’ve make a couple of them and they are pretty easy to build. Specially today that we have different guides that we can read and will help us. Making this type of solar panels helps to save the environment too. You can find more information about this gides at

As most of the people will make the frame from wood for the panel. I suggest that you give all the layers of paint that you can so that your wood will last longer. I also recommend that you give a couple of more layers of paint every year so your panel last longer.

You can also build a metal frame and use Sylgard 184 to encapsulate the cells that way you won’t need wood and will have a commercial “quality like” solar panel that will last longer thus making your diy solar panel more value for you money.

you can see in this video how this is done:

hope this helps some one. thanks MB-BigB for the article.
