New Jersey to triple its offshore wind goals

Governor Jon S. Corzine of New Jersey today announced his plan to triple the state’s offshore wind goal. At the same time, the Gov. Corzine highlighted last week’s selection of Garden State Offshore Energy (GSOE) as the receipient of a grant incentive to build New Jersey’s first offshore wind power pilot plant.
According to the Governor, the original plan called for 1,000 MW of offshore wind power by 2020. The new goal is 3,000 MW of offshore wind power by 2020, which will equal about 13 percent of NJ’s total usage. Also, he wants to get to 1,000 MW by 2010.
The GSOE project consists of a 345MW wind power farm southeast of Atlantic City, about 16 miles off the coast. When completed, the wind farm will provide electricity to about 125,000 houses.
