Scottish Power to build tidal energy project

ScottishPower Renewables has announced plans to build 3 tidal energy projects off the coast of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The projects will consist of 20 underwater turbines at each site, which would generate 60 megawatts of tidal power for up to 40,000 homes.

Scottish Power has said that they will apply for planning permission for the three tidal projects next summer. If the projects are built (its expected to take three years), they would be the first commercial underwater tidal turbine farms in the world.

The turbines they’re planning on using stand 30 meters tall and can work in water as deep as 100 meters. ScottishPower has said that the turbines were tested in Norway and it was shown that the turbine blades moved slow enough so that marine life could avoid them.
