Wind Turbines powered by vehicle traffic? has an interesting little article about research being performed by Mark Oberholzer, a professor of architecture at Rice University in Houston, TX where he has incorporated vertical-axis wind turbines into highway dividers – in other words, wind from passing cars generates the electricity. It’s still preliminary research, but the concept involves using the electricity generated to power nearby applications such as lighting or even light rail systems.
